Burnside was born in Liberty, Indiana and was the fourth of nine children of Edghill and Pamela (or Pamilia) Brown Burnside, a family of Scottish origin. His great-great-grandfather Robert Burnside (1725–1775) was born in Scotland and settled in the Province of South Carolina. His father was a native of South Carolina; he was a slave owner who freed his slaves when he relocated to Indiana. William Yost was born on June 6, 1841, in Jackson Township, Stark County, Ohio. He enlisted with the 104th Ohio Infantry Regiment, organized at Massillon, Ohio, on August 4, 1862. Yost fought in the Atlanta Campaign, his first engagement being at Resaca in May 1864. He survived the war unscathed and died in 1910. From the description of William Yost Civil War diary, 1863-1864.
